Ephesus Ancient City is an iconic ancient site located in Turkey that boasts a rich history. Dating back to the Classical Greek Era, Ephesus was one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League and served as one of the most important harbor cities in the antique world. As a crucial commercial center, it was a bustling port city with a population of approximately 250,000 in the 1st century BC.

The ancient city of Ephesus was also an important site for Christians due to its connection with notable figures such as Virgin Mary, Saint Paul, and Saint John The Evangelist. In fact, it is mentioned in the book of Revelations as one of the seven churches. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of this once-great city, including the impressive Temple of Artemis, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Completed in 550 BC, this sanctuary was built on a sacred site and has been destroyed and rebuilt three times throughout its history.

Another important site for Christians is the Virgin Mary’s House, located at the foot of Bulbul Mountain in Selcuk. This Muslim and Catholic shrine was discovered by Lazarist priests after a Catholic nun in Germany described the place in her visions of the house where Mother Mary lived before she died. Since then, it has become an important pilgrimage spot for Catholics. In 1951, Pope Pius XII gave the House of the Virgin Mary the status of a Holy Place and a Catholic place of pilgrimage. Explore the rich history and religious significance of Ephesus and its surrounding sites on a tour of this fascinating region.
